Home Office Weekly Updates

11th- 17th April 2022

The major news this week is the launch of the UK and Rwanda Migration and Economic Development Partnership with Home Secretary Priti Patel stating “Today the United Kingdom and Rwanda have signed a joint new migration and economic development partnership to put an end to this deadly trade in people smuggling.

The aim is to reduce the number coming across the Channel by sending them to Rwanda. The announcements was accompanied by the memorandum of understanding between Rwanda and the UK, several facts sheets on the cost of asylum in the UK, how will the scheme work, the use of the navy and other accommodation centres to hold Channel Migrants. Of keen interest are the two ministerial letters between the Home Secretary and her Permanent Secretary, who expressed concern about the financial benefits of the scheme.

To emphasis the point of the policy the HO published the irregular migrant numbers. There were 28,526 people detected arriving on small boats in 2021. This compares with 8,466 in 2020, 1,843 in 2019 and 299 in 2018.

In addition, immigration numbers were published on European Union citizens who remained in the UK 5.3 million. In addition we had details on the Afghan scheme and the Ukrainian scheme. The numbers are not declining.

He strongly believes his background and route through life enables him to understand both the needs of communities affected by immigration and the life of immigrants who have settled in the UK. He passionately believe Britain is not a racist nation, but a fair one where all can live but policies need to address the inequities in society and the impacts of immigration both positive and negative.
