Home Office Weekly Updates

16th- 22nd May 2022

This week the Home Office concentrated on Policing and Crime. The Home Secretary’s speech at the Police Federation conference set the tone with her emphasis on her “absolute desire and imperative to ensure that not only we finance and resource policing”. This was followed her statement to back increases in stop and search and drive to make the streets safer.  We also saw consultations on changes to PACE and the extraction of information from electronic devices whilst guidance on changes to the Terrorism Act and a consultation on the Police Covenant completed the picture.

A second big theme this week was around the fire and rescue services. Priti Patel unveiled ambitious plans for fire reform, and also fire services, in addition to a thematic update on the Grenfell Tower inquiry. This was followed by policy papers on the Fire Safety Acts, consultations on personal emergency evacuations, and guidance on fire safety regulations.

On Immigration, the Home Secretary met with the Rwandan Minister Biruta in a visit to Geneva and published an article in the Telegraph on “repairing the broken asylum system”. The Home Office also released the latest Country Returns Guide on the documents required and processes for returning immigration offenders to their country of origin. This will be in a later briefing update by CMEP.

Finally, The Home Office released details of the 24.5 million protective security fund being offered to Mosques and Muslim Faith Schools for security measures to protect places of worship and schools.

He strongly believes his background and route through life enables him to understand both the needs of communities affected by immigration and the life of immigrants who have settled in the UK. He passionately believe Britain is not a racist nation, but a fair one where all can live but policies need to address the inequities in society and the impacts of immigration both positive and negative.
